When the movie Contact came out, the opening scene featured Jodie Foster listening to the Cosmos as heard through the satellite dishes at the Very Large Array. This collection of white satellite dishes are out in the middle of nowhere New Mexico, off highway 60 near Socorro, NM to be a bit more precise. It’s possible to stop by the Very Large Array if you happen to be traveling between the Meteor Crater/Impact Crater near Winslow, AZ and the fine city of Roswell, NM where a UFO is reported to have crashed in 1947. It is a bit out of the way, but I liked the wide open spaces and pretty much having the road to myself for several hours.
The VLA is free to visit and they have a small waking tour. I passed the Wigwam Motel on the way to the VLA.
